How to 5 questions
How to avoid skin allergies

When you wear a watch, unavoidably the watch case and band would be in touch with your skin, at the same time exposed to dust and perspiration. Leaving your watched stained by skin particles, dust, or sweat may cause skin reaction on your wrists.

One of the allergies may be caused by metal ion, as perspiration may extract particles from your watch metal parts such as nickel, cobalt, or chrome. These metal parts are used in both metal bands and leather straps, for example, chrome is used for tanning.

If there is any allergic reaction on your skin, stop wearing the watch right away and consult a dermatologist. Your doctor will be able to diagnose and clarify the source of allergy. In future, avoid wearing watches that contains such metal.

Ensuring cleanliness of watches would minimise the possibility of allergic reactions.

How to care for watch polyurethane band
  • If the polyurethane band loses elasticity or develop cracks, an immediate replacement is highly recommended.
  • Transparent or light coloured polyurethane bands may discolour due to light or stains, or even absorb colours from other close by materials. Long term usage or smokes from cigarettes may turn the band yellowish. Oil or cosmetics stains on polyurethane band are generally irremovable.
  • In the case of extreme discolouration, please consider replacing the band.

How to care for watch leather straps
  • Watches with leather straps must be placed at somewhere well ventilated without direct sunlight exposure. Excessive sunlight may cause the leather strap to discolour or deform.
  • If your watch gets wet with water or perspiration, dry it immediately with a dry cloth or towel.
  • Loosen your leather strap during hot weather to avoid perspiration damaging the strap.

How to care for watch metal bands
  • For visible stains, apply diluted neutral detergent to the surface. For more serious stains, gently brush the band surface with a soft bristle toothbrush, paying extra attention to the gaps of the band.
  • If your watch is non-water resistant, wrap the watch head with cling wrap and wash the whole watch with water.
  • After washing, wipe the band thoroughly with a gentle towel, again paying extra attention to the gaps to ensure the watch is entirely dried.

How to care for water-resistant watches
  • In general, the glass gasket, the crown gasket, and the case back gasket are structured to protect the watch from water immersion. With non-water resistant watches, the structure is different, although most of these watches are “perspiration-proof”.
  • Moisture may develop in the back of the watch glass inside the watch. This may have been caused by temperature difference. Sometimes the moisture may disappear in a short time without creating any functional problem. If the problem persists, consult a watch repairer.
  • After swimming with your watch, make sure to wash it with fresh water and wipe it thoroughly dry to avoid salt or chlorine accumulation.
  • Do not expose your watch to running tap water or car wash machines. Such excessive water pressure may harm your watch.
  • Do not operate the crown of your watch when it is wet.
  • Avoid shampoo and soap, they may accelerate the deterioration of your watch’s gasket.
  • Do not wear your watch when you are taking a hot spring bath, the minerals from hot springs can cause discolouration or decay on the watch.
  • The gasket of a water-resistant watch has a lifespan depending on how the watch is handled. The material of the gasket does deteriorate over time. The wear-and-tear of the gasket will cause the water-resistant function to worsen. Consult with your watch repairer if you have doubts.

Watch structure
  • The mechanical movement is composed of many tiny parts, meticulously structured to ensure accuracy.
  • The power source lays within the spring.
  • When the spring coils, it generates power to the wheels and in turn the hands.
  • Generally speaking, mechanical watches gain or lose 25 seconds per day. This depends on the type of mechanism, climate, or the environment.
  • You may experience some variation in timekeeping on a typical day as the watch is wound up.

Types of mechanical watches

Automatic winding watches are considered to be more convenient, as they do not need to winding up like hand winding watches, or replace batteries like quartz watches. Automatic watches are wound through normal wrist movement if worn actively.

General tips for mechanical watches
  • To restart the watch after it completely stopped, or after repairs, wind it up by shaking it from side to side until it becomes almost fully wound. Set the time, date and day before wearing.
  • Once the watch is fully wound up, it can operate for approximately 30 to 40 hours. Wearing the watch without being fully wound up may result in a gain or loss of time. Wearing the watch daily for at least 10 hours a day can help with the accuracy.
  • To wind the watch fully:
  • Hold the watch with the face-side up
  • Shake the watch from side to side (2 times per second) for about 7 to 10 minutes.

I went to three watch repair shops in Sydney to repair a Sekonda watch strap with an internal link, all who said they couldn’t fix it without damaging the strap or ordering in specialist parts. Regal Jewellers didn’t bat an eyelid and was able to repair the linkage the same day without damage or the need to order parts. Very happy!

Awesome work. I had the entire movement replaced in a tag heuer link watch and a 25yr omega for less than 700. I’d already spent 1100 at tag trying to get the lemon fixed. These guys are honest and reliable.

I had a great customer service experience. I have a 20 year old Tag Heuer which needed a new battery. I took it to the jeweler who said it would take an hour and cost $85 including the pressure test. It was ready for me when I returned later. The jeweler pointed out that the winder tube was faulty and gave me some advice about using the crown. Haven’t tried the watch under water but I’m not expecting any problems
